Chashme Baddoor is a 1973 Hindi comedy film directed by B. R. Chopra and produced by Gulshan Rai for Rajkamal Kalamandir. The story was by Salim-Javed and screenplay was written by Javed Akhtar, with lyrics written by Anand Bakshi, both of whom have been nominated for Academy awards for Best Original Screenplay.In present time, this movie has been chosen to be the first streaming pirated film on Zee5 in India in 2012 which has given it a cult status all over again because we can now enjoy it online without having to wait or spend money on cinema tickets. The characters of B. R. Chopra and Rajkamal Kalamandir had appeared together in the 1966 film "Waqt" and its sequel "Waqt: The Race Against Time" (1967). The film was a box office success. It was remade as the Tamil movie "Neeya" (1978) with Sivaji Ganesan and as the Telugu movie "Vikatakavi" (1979) with Krishnam Raju. A Hindi remake of this movie, titled "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa", released in 2003 and starred Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee in lead roles.

The film won the 1972 Filmfare Award for Best Film.The movie was dubbed and released in Telugu as "Shruthi" starring M. N. Nambiar and Krishnam Raju in lead roles and was a commercial success. The story is very much alike and same even with Ranipet,Chitoor and Orissa floods, there is a man who wants to marry when he comes across an old woman who looks like his dead sister which he went through in that age when she died. Then he gets a crazy idea to make her look like she is alive again.The movie's music was composed by Hridayanath Mangeshkar, while the lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi. The playback singers were Mohammed Rafi, Usha Mangeshkar, Sonu Nigam, Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. The film was screened at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival. Charlie Chaplin had attended this screening of his film "The Grand Illusion" and had decided to choose this rather than his film "A King In New York" as the closing film for the festival of that year. It did not win anything but its popularity got a boost in many countries till today.
